bookshelves: mystery, thriller

The plot (about the apparent suicide of a cadet at a Venice military academy) wasn't really my style. I prefer my mystery story lines to be cheesy and macabre. That said, the primary character, Chief Inspector Brunetti, was likable and interesting; his reaction to the scenario was strangely realistic and gave the measure of violence in the story real emotional depth. The book is full of sad, odd vignettes and funny asides. I'll definitely keep my eye out for Donna Leon in the future. Besides, her next book, A Noble Radiance , is supposedly about 'an infamous unsolved case of kidnapping and disappearance involving one of Venice's oldest, most aristocratic families,' and involves a rotting corpse wearing a signet ring.
