Is Dean Koontz a bereaved parent? His understanding of grief after the loss of a child and his depiction of Compassionate Friends is accurate. The book itself is a little creepy and icky, it is a little long-winded, but overall has a positive ending, if one can put the boy in the sub-basement out of mind. Crimes should not be committed in scientific interest.

JW Yeah, I was actually creeped a bit in the end thinking about the boy in the sub-basement too. It was literally the only scary part of the book and yet it wasn't Koontz's words so much but my imagination of this little monster in straps four stories under the ground with so much rage. The book was so depressing I was thinking like two stars but the ending bumped it to three for me.
