** spoiler alert **
I both liked and despised the two main characters, Marianne and Connell, but I think that was the point. The book follows the lives of these two rather dysfunctional and co-dependent characters. Their story is gripping and was exactly what I needed to get back into reading. I've only given it three stars because it left me feeling a little unsatisfied - while I acknowledge the intention of the cyclical nature of their relationship and this pull and push game - it resulted in a lack of closure for me.
I must compliment Sally Rooney though on truly capturing the emotions one feels when there is a shift in life, like going to university. Her description of Connells loss of identity is so relatable for so many who move to a new place/life phase, etc.
Was it profound? Well, no. But then again, it is just a story about normal people who are pretty self-involved.
