Oh, my goodness! I didn't plan it this way, but I started listening to this amazing bio of John Adams on January 18th, 2009--2 days before the inauguration of our first African-American president. Well, the book added such depth and excitement as I watched the proceedings! I was actually "tingling" with pride and love for my country and its founding fathers. I couldn't believe how often I thought of John Adams that day, especially during Obama's speech.

And I'm in LOVE with John Adams! I've known bits and pieces of his story, and he was a great character in one of my favorite musicals of all time ("1776"), but I had no idea that he was such an upstanding human being, a person of great integrity, humor, self-discipline and unwavering loyalty. He was always working to improve himself for the sake of others, including his family and, of course, his country. He was also a loving and devoted husband. The letters between him and Abigail are exquisitely beautiful. I'd like to read a whole biography just on Abigail because she was equally admirable.

God bless you, John (and Abigail) Adams! I was not aware of the debt our country owes you for the sacrifices you made.
