Read in January, 2009

I have only just started this, but every page offers another small reason to like Dorothy Whipple's writing. Take this: 'She painted in oils. Not mildly as befitted a maiden lady of fifty-three years, but boldly and badly.'

Ann-Marie I'm going to have to avoid looking at your review of this, if a fuller one is forthcoming, because I have it on my shelf ...

message 2: by Hol (new) - added it

Hol I'm not far into it and will try to avoid spoilers later. I have a 1939 library copy so would someday love to read the preface in your new edition (assuming your copy is P books)....

Ann-Marie But of course it's a Persephone book, purchased on my last trip to London. You are so clever finding all these old library copies of these books ...

Beth Bonini Whipple is a genius at characterization. Aunt Victoria was such a well-drawn (!) character.

I just finished this book and thoroughly enjoyed it.
