Jesse is a 13 year old girl who thinks she lives in the year 1840. But, when children in her village start getting sick, her mother sends her on a dangerous mission to the outside world to get help. Outside it is 1996.

I thought that this would be a fun light-hearted read about a young teenager's reactions to the strange new world. Cars, telephones, lightbulbs... but it was much deeper than that. I almost felt frightened along with her as she experienced things for the first time.

Lots of twists in the story kept it very interesting. I could not put it down. This was the first book I've read by Margaret Peterson Haddix and will definitely be reading more of her books.
