An intriguing fantasy story about a teenage girl, Lucy Scarborough, who comes to find out there is a generational curse on girls in her family. When Scarborough girls turn 17, they get pregnant, and immediately upon having their child the mother goes insane, leaving the baby in need of foster care. Lucy's own mother appears throughout the story pushing a shopping cart filled with bottles and embarrasses her daughter by screaming and throwing things. When Lucy herself becomes pregnant at 17, she realizes just how real the curse is and sets out to break the curse. Lucy's foster parents and her long-time friend (Zach) assist Lucy in deciphering a Scarborough Fair ballad that contains three impossible riddles that must be cracked before lifting the curse. But will the evil Elfin Knight, responsible for casting the curse, add yet another Scarborough to his list of women possessed? Rated as a Top 10 Pick in a recent Young Adult Literature conference I attended, even not being a particular fan of fantasy stories, I enjoyed the story, especially as the final chapters played out.
