it was amazing
bookshelves: fantasy

I loved this book. We read Eragon out-loud to our children and enjoyed it as a fun fantasy, ignoring some of the more derrivative elements - obviously you could see the 15 year old boy loved Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Wizard of Earthsea, etc. The book had a fascinating ending and had us eager for Eldest.

When I picked up Eldest, I read ahead on my own and couldn't stop. Much more character driven than Eragon, I loved the multiple story arcs. The good versus evil became much more grey. The themes of family, love, and growing up were much stronger and I think one can tell how much more Paolini had matured as an author and person. I thought there were great bits of wisdom in this story and I LOVED following the female characters and Roran's story even more than Eragon's. There are some fun suprises as well, where Eragon felt more predictable. I think Paolini has set up a much more epic tale and can't wait for book 3.
