it was amazing
bookshelves: 2009

The book starts with K. arriving in the village near the castle. I found the first 40 pages a bit annoying because I was expecting him to get to the castle and let the story begin. But only when I finally understood that he is never to get to that castle I could finally enjoy the book. I think that the story could go on forever. It is said that the book is not finished. Maybe. But it is like it was left like that. After finishing it I had an odd reaction: I thought that I should re-read it at once. :)) There are many absurd things going on. But it is a hilarious book that’s for sure. One of my favorite motives in the book is when the administrative system is described in its magnificent bureaucracy. It is always perfect and there are no errors. Beside all this, the book speaks also of solitude. K. is in fact a lonely man. He arrives in this village at night and after that is cast away from the inn. He knows no one in the village and seems to have no friend. He is almost in agony for not being able to meet his employer. His fiancée leaves him. The two daughters are also, because of an absurd reason, in the state of a self imposed solitude. Here are two quotes (in Romanian): “Intre timp trecusera multe luni de la acea prima adresa, daca nu ani, lucru usor de inteles, caci daca o adresa merge pe calea ei, asa cum se intampla de regula, soseste la sectia respectiva cel mult intr-o zi, si se rezolva chiar in aceeasi zi, dar daca a apucat pe un drum gresit - si data fiind excelenta organizarii trebuie sa caute drumul gresit de-a dreptul cu ravna, altfel nu-l gaseste - atunci, bineinteles, dureaza mult. Daca exista organe de control? Nu exista decat organe de control! Bineinteles, nu sunt destinate sa descopere erori in sensul grosolan al cuvantului, caci erori nu se fac, si chiar daca se intampla o eroare, ca in cazul dumneavoastra, cine are dreptul sa sustina pana la urma ca a fost intr-adevar o eroare?”
