really liked it

Pine is perfect spooky-season reading, beginning as it does with Halloween and the strange arrival of a silent woman who emerges from the dense woods one day, only to vanish the next.

Part gothic haunting, part murder mystery, there are some genuinely tense and unsettling moments. At its best, the book is a compelling and sparsely written, with well-drawn characters who have more than their fair share of small-town baggage.

But here’s the thing… A full two thirds of the way through the book, a teenager goes missing. This isn’t a spoiler - it’s clearly stated in the blurb that this happens. As events escalate and we move from supernatural to man-made events, things are revealed and explained in a rush. The ending feels a little rushed, leaving a slightly unsatisfactorily neat resolution.
