I'll begin by admitting I like Kim Harrison's hallow series. I started reading the books out of order and eventually went back to start over from the beginning. They definitely work better in sequence. The entire series is a coming-of-age story in which Rachel slowly grows up. One of things I especially like about the character is that sometimes Rachel learns from her mistakes and sometimes she doesn't. That may sound like an odd comment but to me it feels more like real life. I’m a little sick of the three-act structure so the fact that this story doesn’t follow that format doesn’t bother me. We are not presented with a problem at the beginning, which is resolved by the end. Instead, we follow Rachel through various problems, some she solves and others she doesn’t. In other words, life goes on.
