it was amazing

Amazing piece of work. The story is riveting, of course - girl raised by paranoid, survivalist Mormons, likely mentally ill geniuses, in rural Idaho. They subject her to terror, mortal danger, mental and physical abuse, and Olympic-caliber gaslighting. But also, crucially, an intense devotion to a story (The End of Days), and a profound, if ultimately toxic, sense of family. The ways in which she educates and extricates herself from some iron wills makes for fascinating reading - not to mention a re-evaluation of education in general, and a whetted curiosity about the actual merits of herbs/holistic practices (also the potential lethality of same). Aside from all that, and most compelling, is the luminous prose. Maybe only reading the Book of Mormon and The Bible when you're a kid isn't all bad?

Highly recommended. Run, don't walk.
