My favorite books are the ones where you can just tell that the author loves what they're writing about. Be it the Civil War, cryptology, salt, or comic books - if the author is passionate about the subject and manages to convey that passion onto the page, that's good enough for me.

It was a bonus that Chabon had a wonderful sense of humor about his book as well - some times giddy, other times tragic - but it made the book that much more interesting.

It's not a requirement, but it certainly say that it helps to be a fan of comic books when reading this book. Since I've read hundreds of comic books, Chabon's characters took on instant life for me, and made the book that much more enjoyable to read.

Kate I've heard from several people that this book is dry and hard to get through. I'll be interested to know what you think about it. I've picked it up and put it down more than a handful of times....
