Greg Bear is the MAN! Inspired (I think) by Stephen Jay Gould's hypothetical "punctuated equilibrium" theory of evolution, Bear takes this big ball and runs for a touchdown. Bear makes it seem very feasible - and very alarming - that evolution might actually work this way on occasion. Let's hope it doesn't happen anytime soon. A frightening and compelling work.
