I think we've established I'm a fan of retellings (Greek, fairytale, whathaveyou). I was curious about how Pearce would pull off a retelling of The Little Mermaid, since so much of it is set in the sea. And I was curious what elements from her previous work would appear. I wasnt disappointed. The story follows Lo and Celia, a sea girl and a triplet with rare power and the boy they save. Jude, however, isn't the focal point of the story. Its the relationship between the girls and how they grow as characters that was so intriguing. And while the ending is not your typical happily ever after, it's satisfying and true to the book.
Overall, excellent work, Ms. Pearce.
