George Orwell does know how to create a depressing character. I repeatedly tried to find something in any of the characters to empathize with and repeatedly came up empty. Orwell's trademark satire was as striking as ever and his sharp critique of English colonialism were the most endearing qualities of the book. There was little else, though, to make Burmese Days stand above any of his other works that I've read.
