The Shadow Lines
Beautiful phrasing and the occasional passing insight kept me reading this book even though I was often confused about the chronology. In the end, I felt I understood why Ghosh might have written his book this way, but it was still unsatisfying. Most annoying was the omniscient narrator who was the central character. I came to understand his omniscience was actually his version of the story (at least that's what I think is going on), but even so, I was confused without the confusion leading to enlightenment. A few truly bizarre things happen with no real explanation and I couldn't see how they contributed to the book.
