Read from September 30 to October 08, 2012

A wonderfully focused, compact fantasy that manages to deftly weave world-building threads around the edges of its character-driven story with minimal exposition.

Lead character Sabriel is a well-developed, engaging heroine who balances intelligence and magical skill with a tendency to make bad decisions at dangerous moments - which, in turn, makes for a gripping story that take in some evocative and tense scenes.

If I had to pick one thing as an issue, well, I guess the relationships between Sabriel and the other characters don't get enough room to fully develop. And things do get a bit rushed and frantic towards the end, enough so that the finale feels slightly underdone.

But quibbles aside, this is a wonderful piece of YA fantasy. Well worth the read.
