The world-building in Half Life is fabulous. What's life like when conjoined twins ("twofers") are a common, yet still marginalized identity? Twofer pride conventions, lobbyists for twofer rights, twofer radicals, and all that cool stuff. Twofer identity particularly intersects with sexual orientation, with the narrator Nora a lesbian and her sleeping twin Blanche straight.

I couldn't tell what was real and what wasn't with this book, which is why I only gave it three stars. The magical realism and surrealism are part of the point of Half Life, but I guess it's just not my style.
