Mary's Reviews > Drama
I'm not much of a graphic novel reader, but this one just came in and looked pretty good. It was slow at the reference desk this afternoon, so I was able to read it in about an hour. I really liked it. It was like Glee for middle schoolers - except that it revolved around the drama geeks, rather than "gleeks." There's a little bit of middle school angst, but nothing too dramatic - mostly unrequited crushes and the stress of putting on the school musical. What I thought was refreshing was the matter-of-fact way in which a couple of homosexual characters are portrayed. No bullying, no intolerance...it just is what it is. That's not to say that bullying and intolerance of young gay kids is not taking place in the real world, but maybe portraying them in this fashion to kids in this age range will get kids thinking about the appropriate way to interact with their peers - gay and straight.
