I once knew someone who claimed to never imagine where she was geographically, to never picture herself in, say, the state of Washington, or on the west coast of the continent, or clinging to the edge of a planet under a thin atmosphere on the edge of the Milky Way galaxy . . . ; maybe a lot of people are this way, but it hadn't occurred to me that everyone else doesn't occasionally step outside themselves and envision their context. Lydia Netzer is definitely not one of these perspective-limited people - she does the big-picture thing a lot in her novel. She also works in metaphors - albeit somewhat heavy-handed metaphors that get over-explained - of planets and orbs and roundnesses of all sorts, of embryos, and bald heads and the curved nature of space. She's panoramic and specific both.

Although I liked the science-y geeky themes and the equations and the space-orbit scenes, the novel dealt too unabashedly with several topics du jour (Asperger's, pregnancy, alopecia [is that a topic du jour?]) in a manner and tone that was altogether too precious and cute for my taste. Also, the protagonist engages in near-constant magical thinking that I found irritatingly irrational and adolescent. So two stars: it was "just okay."
