I've always enjoyed Martin's books. Cruel Shoes was the first adult book I ever read that made me really laugh, not just giggle. He is a very intelligent person and you will respect him more after having read this book. I read the whole thing in one sitting, which is very rare for me since I don't usually have a block of time to spare.

It amazes me that he remembers jokes told decades ago - not just his own, either. He remembers the timing and phrasing behind the jokes. He knows why they were funny and can put it into words. He made an intellectual study of humour while creating it and passed it on to us in this book. It doesn't take the fun out of comedy, in case you were worried about that.
