This story covers a number of issues but the chief one is the stress of war on soldiers when they return home. How little the V.A. does for them, A different slant here when Joleen, the mother of a 12 y.o daughter and a 5 year old, who is called up from the Army Guard unit for Afghanistan. She flies a helicopter and the mission involves not just transporting bigwigs(as she tells her family) but flights into active zones to retrieve bodies. Her husband goes from being a defense lawyer with few responsibilities at hoe to a "Mom" while still doing his office work. The marriage had been going down before she was sent away. When she does return her nightmares and the fact that she had a leg shot off creates family disord. Finally when he is defending a case of a young soldier who in a PTS black-out kills his wife, he learns more and begins to understand his wife.
Along the way there are quire a few teary moments. The author does a fine job of character development and explaining the reasons that the symptoms are so poorly treated or understood.
