really liked it
bookshelves: urban-fantasy

Overall, I thought this was a very well written story. Although somewhat predictable, it had a reasonable pace and kept enough of the unexpected turns to keep this reader interested. I do think she is a very good author and can tell a wonderful story, and this is no different. It's still too early in the series for me to make an opinion on the series as a whole, but I do feel that the first book of her Kingmaker, Kingbreaker series was better. This is a worthwhile read though, especially for the fans of fantasy looking for decent but amusing literature. It's a very enjoyable story left open ended and I look forward to picking up the next in the series.

My only serious criticism is this, and for the most part I don't feel this is the fault of the author. Rather, the fault lies with publishing company or whoever had the what he or she considered unimportant task of editing the book. It was terrible! Missing periods, periods in the wrong place creating fragments, missing ending quotation marks so it was difficult to tell when a character had stopped speaking and there was a shift to describing scenery, words misspelled (such as using "cach" when it was clearly meant to say "each," or "he" instead of "be"), I could go on! Not that it made the book unreadable, but for someone like me who finds those sort of mistakes irksome and painful, it got to be quite a bee in my bonnet. I am the first to admit I'm no super human grammar intellectual by any stretch of the imagination, but when mistakes are THAT obvious and THAT frequent, there's a serious issue with whomever is printing this book. It's almost like they don't take any pride in their product.
