Although I liked Finnikin of the Rock well enough, I didn't love it. I loved Froi of the Exiles which takes place three years after the preceding book came to a close. Finnikin and Isaboe are ruling Lumatere, trying to right all the wrongs caused years ago, and heal the citizens. Froi, a trained assassin who tried to rape Isaboe many years ago, is now a much more polished young man, determined to serve the royal family in any way possible. He is sent to the kingdom of Charyn to kill its king, but once he arrives, he finds a princess whose sanity is questionable and intrigue and violence in every direction. Unexpectedly, he is drawn to Quintana and uncertain how he can accomplish his mission. Once the king is murdered, the action moves even more swiftly, and Froi and those he has come to trust move through a series of underground caves in search of safety. The author shifts the setting constantly so that readers move from Charyn to Lumatere, and because there is so much happening in both places, the pain of leaving one place for another is palpable. These characters are complex and not always easy to understand, and the book's conclusion is a cliffhanger in every sense of the word. I hope the author is hard at work crafting the next title because I need to know what happens next. I don't know how she managed to pull off making Froi, an unattractive character in the first book, into such an appealing character, but she did so beautifully. References to events from the first book make even more sense, giving them more significance than they might have originally had.
