Charlie Laidlaw's latest novel, Everyday Magic is a fantastical beauty that fans old and new will find themselves immensely enjoying.

Carole Gunn admittedly does not live the best of lives – and she knows it. Nothing seems to have gone the way she wanted. Yet this fact can't seem to hold Carol back, as she fights to find a new journey in life.

This is a novel that will feel real – sometimes too much so – for readers. Carol's journey touches upon the literal everyday magic that we all face and frequently take for granted.

It has been a while since I read a book that touched me, like Everyday Magic. Carol's story is poignant in part because it is so down to earth and so very human. There are no avoiding Carol's flaws, and that's okay. It makes her story and her world all the more enjoyable because of those elements.

I think, from now on when I try to picture a healthy example of a woman's journey for self-discovery, it's Everyday Magic that I will imagine from now on. The reality of it is foundational, while humanity is touching. More than that, this novel resonates with strength and a desire to understand.

That's something I feel like we can all sympathize with, at least sometimes. The touches of humor here and there help to keep this novel from getting too heavy, which it otherwise might have been at risk to do.

The final balance is fairly perfect, keeping readers emotional and entertained while leading up to that conclusion we're all looking forward to.

Thanks to Charlie Laidlaw for making this book available for review. All opinions expressed are my own.
