Valancy Stirling is twenty-nine, a quiet woman who lives with her overbearing mother and irritating cousin; she is taken for granted by her family and constantly teased about being a spinster, and her only consolations are John Foster's wonderful books about nature and her intricate daydreams of the Blue Castle, a romantic place with a romantic hero. When she visits the doctor and finds out that she has only a year to live, she finds the courage to live out her dreams at last. This is one of my favorite Montgomery novels, with a marvelous heroine and especially lovely evocations of nature and the outdoors

Tracy I've always thought that this was my favourite of L.M. Montgomery's books. While it is sad to think that Valancy had to believe she was dying to break free of the stultifying expectations of her family the book is often hysterically funny. It is one of those books you sit and read and laugh to yourself until others think you mad.

Margaret It's definitely my favorite of the non-Anne/Emily books. Some of those scenes where Valancy is horrifying her family really are very funny!
