This is a slow-moving, contemplative book, so I was surprised by my reluctance to lay it aside. The story is about a man who takes in two young pregnant girls on the run from a malevolent pimp (right word, wrong time period). After some Unpleasantness, he is left with one of the girls and a baby. The rest of their lives takes up the rest of the book. This was a powerful story, with understated grace, and I go to sleep now knowing that it will haunt me for the next few days. It raises the questions of for whom am I responsible? How do I rightly discharge that duty? How do we respond to evil? How far do we pursue those whose hearts have drawn them away? What will we leave behind?
