Conrad Just because I'm curious, why four stars and not five? What bugged you about it?

Christy Hmm...that's a good question. It's not so much that something bugged me about it, I suppose, as it is that it felt like something was lacking. I didn't have the intense response to the book as so many others seemed to have. Perhaps it's the graphic novel form (which I am less accustomed to reading), perhaps it's the frame narrative, perhaps it's the fact that I'm constantly taken out of the story (whether Art's or his father's) and reminded of its existence as a narrative (not only the graphic novel form and the frame narrative do this for me; the clever postmodern effects do it, too), or perhaps it's that something's wrong with me--regardless, it didn't quite make me love it.

But it was very good, nonetheless.

I'm re-reading it now to teach next week to a bunch of freshmen. Maybe I'll have a change of heart.
