Having seen the adaptation of this on TV several times and not liked it, I was a bit unsure of whether I would enjoy the original novel or not. I ended up neither particularly liking it nor hating it, which I think is one of the worst things that can happen when reading a book. You want there to be at least one element that grabs you and shakes you hard. Unfortunately, this was a pleasant read but nothing beyond that. All of the actual storyline and plot happens in the second half of the book, while the first half is a bit bogged down in exposition. It's not all doom and gloom though. Ariadne Oliver makes a welcome appearance in the novel, as do the Calthrops and those three recurring characters are so well established that they liven up any chapter that they're in. The twist on the ending as well was nice as I hadn't seen it coming at all. Whilst The Pale Horse ends up being a satisfactory Christie novel, I can't help wishing I'd read something that truly grabbed me.
