Set in a dystopian near future, The Dog Star focuses on a man who is one of the few people left (on earth? in the US?) after two powerful illnesses wipe out most of the population. After reading and loveing Age of Miracles earlier this summer, I was optimistic about another end of the world as we know it tale. I must say, this one is not quite so rewarding. Though we do get to more of a triumph of the human spirit kind of a place later in the book, early on I found it to be tough going. I understand that Heller needed to illustrate just how barren and lonely like can be if you are one of the few people left on earth, it was so depressing that at one point I considered stopping reading. One we get through the "life is hard, then everyone you love dies, then you keep living part", it gets much better. If the author had been able to balance the story a bit more.
