This timeless Newbery honor book with a reading level of four would be nice for a father and daughter to read together. Second grader Ramona and her older sister Beezus are waiting expectantly for their parents to decide to take them out to dinner one Friday evening/payday.
But the father has lost his job, and so the family must eat at home. Ramona's father is suddenly no fun, and Ramona wishes she had a million dollars to make things right. To add to her distress, her father is smoking.
This ordinary slice-of-life realistic fiction is just as pertinent today as it was when it was written. Why? What does Beverly Cleary do to make it so?
