Other reviews I've read trying to dismiss this author, or this book in particular, are truly laughable. The only reason for these that I can come up with is that these are lazy people who can't come up with an argument more effective than "so is your old man!"

America is an empire. If I had any doubt before reading this book, that doubt has vanished. Ferguson's point is that we're not terribly good at it.

I like to think we could become good at leading the world if we followed his prescriptions, but I'm not holding my breath for that.

I find myself wondering how things might have been different if McArthur had made it all the way across the Rubicon back in the 50's, and if the world might not be a better and safer place now because of it; if we might have a few more Japans and Germanys and a few less North Koreas and Irans.
