really liked it

Perfectly captures and explores the unease of understanding the unfairness of capitalism yet being unable to live in a system outside it. Written in a series of short vignettes, Biss records and probes her discomfort with comfort in a way that brings together economic theory, art, philosophy, and anthropology.

Perhaps its shortcoming is that the author presents no alternative, but equally perhaps that’s inevitable, written as it is from within the gilded cage of someone successfully playing by the rules of a game that gives her an unfair advantage.
