it was amazing
bookshelves: nonfiction

I have long loved Bechdel's Dykes to Watch Out For, but this graphic memoir is nothing short of extraordinary. ("Graphic memoir" means a memoir in the form of a graphic novel, although short parts of it are, indeed, moderately graphic.) Somehow Bechdel makes the graphic form tell much more than just the storyline: her spare text conveys complicated emotions and literary allusions, all of which are entwined with her compelling drawings - which manage to be at the same time clear and somehow mysterious. As the story and images double and redouble back on themselves, things are not always what they seem, despite the beautiful clarity of both Bechdel's prose and pen.
