James Lee Burke continues in his presentation of Louisiana, warts and all, and Will Patton's delivery makes this series work beautifully as an audio selection. The usual combination of poetry and violence is present, plus the usual cast of characters. Add some villains that are just too bad to be believed, but which represent the best (that is worst) of Parish character, and the story zips along. Burke's trademark sensuous detail, incorporating the odors and tastes as well as the sights of his beloved state, provide a fully rounded addition to the Dave Robichaux series.
