Red Lagoe has struck gold, once again, with her sophomore collection, Dismal Dreams!
It's no secret I'm a long-time fan of Red's. So much so, I practically begged her for an advance reader's copy of Dismal Dreams. My poor friend was probably scared not to send me one.
But I digress.
If you love short stories with strong female leads, if you love horror, and if you love a perfect balance of fun and seriousness, you should definitely grab yourself a copy of this collection.
All the stories are fantastic, but the standouts for me were:
Dismal Dreams - Dark, gritty, and disturbing, this may have been my favorite of the bunch.
The Creation of Man - Though I'm not a terribly religious person, this is a fun, quirky look at the Adam & Eve story. Very clever.
Flicker - I'd actually read this before. In fact, it's the very first story I ever read of Red's. And it's gruesome and terrifying.
Valentine's Day - Face it, ladies, I think we'll all be able to relate to this story on some level.
One Year Anniversary - This story was off-the-charts weird, and I loved every minute.
Never Have I Ever - I'd also read this story before, and it's always been a stand-out for me of Red's work. It's brilliant, plain and simple. I wish I'd thought of it myself.
As a side note, can we just stare at the cover for a while? Because it's lovely.
Great job, Red! I'm impressed!

I'm 99% certain Red drew and designed it herself. And, it actually fits like a puzzle piece to the cover of her first anthology, Lucid Screams. She's very clever. :)

Red's stories are always excellent. :)

It looks normal for me. I think Goodreads is switching things up...changing the look of the site. There are many glitches, I've noticed.
