It's a young adult book about coming of age in a not-so-great future (after a disaster has made food scarce and technology scarcer). Good main protagonist who puts herself in danger to save her younger sister. Basically the central power keeps control over the regions by requiring a annual sacrifice from the teenagers who must battle to the death with the other sacrifices. The winner gets to live in luxury for the rest of their life. Stronger regions have made an industry out of winning and weaker ones seldom do because they are naturally disadvantaged. So it's about power and it's about knowing your strengths and weaknesses and making the most of them and it's about learning who to trust when. Worryingly like the survivor games on TV with the cult of the winner.
