The Gruffalo is an early learners book written by Julia Donaldson. The book is about a mouse that walks through the forest. On its walk, the mouse bumps into different types of animals that eat mice. The mouse scares them away by telling them he will meet a gruffalo. Towards the end of its journey, the mouse is shocked when it actually meets a gruffalo. The gruffalo wants to eat the mouse, but the mouse convinces the gruffalo that it is the scariest animal in the woods. As a result, the gruffalo respects the mouse and decides not to eat it.

The Gruffalo could be read to a KS1 class. The book is a good introduction to adjectives for the pupils as they are used to describe the gruffalo. The pupils could write a poem about the gruffalo using adjectives and comparatives. The class could do this together on the carpet. After that, the pupils could create their own creatures and draw pictures of them. Next, the pupils could write poems about their creatures using adjectives and comparatives. They could decorate their work and put it on display.

Erin Hm. Sounds like a summary rather than a review.
