Eloisa James has an amazing ability to get me emotionally involved in her stories. The relationships have so many extreme highs and lows that you just get swept up and have to keep reading. OFTEN, they make me cry, and this was no exception. But occasionally when I am done I will think back on a plot and think - "wtf?". This story of an unconventional looking woman who weds her childhood friend and then discovers their marriage is based on a lie works very well at the beginning. The moment of betrayal was a sucker punch that really got me, but the plot developments afterwards might just be a pirate and a coincidence too far for me. Still, I did gobble it up and enjoy every moment of the reading.

Michelle Young Yeah the pirate stint lasted about six and a half years too long to be believable to me. There were countless over the top moments. Did James really have to leave the country the next day? Couldn't he have tried a wee bit harder to explain in the first place? And when he came back, what was up with his determination to be like Trevelyan? And Theo became ridiculously rigid. Too bad because I did like the childhood friends connection!
