it was amazing
bookshelves: judaica

This is one of my favorite books, which I re-read periodically. It's an excellent introduction to the history of the Torah. It explains the "documentary hypothesis", which states that the Torah consists of four originally separate texts, edited into one some time after they were composed, and then goes on to discuss what happened to those texts and how they were eventually compiled into the form we know today. There is a good deal of guesswork, but that is identified as such, and we enjoy following Friedman's thinking.
