This novel is very well written. However, I had the impression that the author kept changing the identity of the stranger who adopted Ren from the boys' home. Was he just a stranger, or was he Ren's brother? And what was his purpose for adopting Ren in the first place? Because the boy's one-handedness would help soften a crowd of marks for the stranger's scams? Or, perhaps, because there was some long ago connection between the two? If there was any foreshadowing of the true relationship, I missed it as did the rest of my reading group.
