Meh. I wish she hadn’t made it a series. So why did I give it 3 stars? It was well written—I like Miss Marillier’s prose.

Now I will proceed to tell you why I gave it three stars instead of five.

Son of the Shadows didn’t flow well, and the characters were rather bland. They read like reheated character ideas she probably had for the last book, but threw out and decided to use for the sequel. That may be why this book felt a loooot like the last one: forbidden love, healer protagonist, protagonist living away from home, protagonist doctors sick man, protagonist is a young female, etc.

Also, the Ciaran/Niamh love story was more interesting than the Liadan/Bran story. Bran wasn’t even likeable. I mean, maybe if your type is the ultra-sensitive-but-hides-it-all-under-a-grumpy-and-gloomy-exterior kind of guy…but he also happens to be your family’s sworn enemy kind of guy…who also happens to be the kind of guy who just kidnapped you…who also happens to be the guy you’ve only known for less than a week! Really?!?

P.S. What kind of name is ‘Bran’ for a leading hunk?
P.P.S. Rated R for sexual content. Not really a YA book.

But it was well written. Despite all of that. :)
