I liked this book, but didn't quite love it. It's a book I kept putting down while I usually read books cover to cover unless I fall asleep from exhaustion. The story is solid, but I felt that Walton didn't do enough to make her world hers. It's so obviously England after the fall of the Roman empire, but with different names for the people and places and with gender equality. Even the religion is just Christianity, but instead of crucifying the matryr-prophet, they've stoned him, so people wear a stone, not a cross, around their neck. To me, it sort of felt as if the writer didn't have the confidence to write a true historic novel, but not enough fantasy to create a separate world...
