I did have a very hard time believing that a vet wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a hen and a rooster without a blood test. Especially beings the rooster in question was a White Plymouth Rock.

Robin Umbley If you recall, the rooster wasn't fully developed yet when the Brazilian woman said he was a rooster. It was a larger chick at that point.

Amy I generally have a good idea as to how many roosters vs hens I have quite early on. Not always absolutely correct, of course, but usually pretty close. There are more birds for comparison, though--that would probably make a difference. I'll have to look and see how old he was, too--I'm thinking it was an older bird (older than a month or two), but I could be remembering incorrectly.

Jane Night Amy, I had that same thought too. And it was strange no one even considered that the bird might be a boy. I mean half of all chicks will probably be roosters.
