The Dog Stars is an interesting read. An actually believable post-apoctalyptic situation, the story is focused on the moral dilemmas a survivor might face, and Heller makes some interesting observations. The most significant aspect of the book is the writing style, which is interesting, but also kind of annoying. The narrator supposedly suffered brain damage from a severe fever, and, as such, writes in choppy, awkward sentences. Unfortunately, Heller should have either taken the style further or just cut it out completely; it is awkward enough to slow the reader down, but not interesting enough to add much to the character. The plot has a good pace, but the character development is a bit slow. Hands down, the best part of the book is the narrator's dog, but it is not good enough to make the book truly impactful. Overall, it is a different kind of read, but nothing spectacular.
