really liked it

Rebecca Stead has done it again, with this insightful book into bullying and the lives of 12 year olds. Georges gets through school and moving from a house into an apartment (his dad lost his job a year ago). He makes a friend of Safer, another kid who lives in his new apartment building. Safer gets Georges to join him in spying on one of the building's occupants. Georges' mom is always working at the hospital, and he spends much of his time missing her too. The characters in this story are so well drawn that you get completely engrossed in their lives. I felt for Georges and loved hearing more about Safer's bohemian family--his parents let their children name themselves. Safer's little sister Candy is hilarious.

This is an awesome fast read for fans of "Harriet the Spy" and believable characters figuring out how to get through life.
