The Beast is anything but beastly. In fact, he behaves toward Beauty in a thoughtful and considerate way. Beauty thinks she is anything but beautiful. In fact, she grows into a lovely and strong young woman. In Robin McKinley's haunting retelling of the classic tale, Beauty and the Beast, these two characters bring out the best in one another and live to enjoy the rewards of behaving with grace, honor, and hope.

Kirsten Have you read her other adaptation of Beauty & the Beast, Rose Daughter? I think I like it even more than this one.

TheSaint I bought a copy for my library, but have no memory of reading it. Perhaps I will have the opportunity soon, as my school district is dire financial straights (again), and I'll have to stop buying new books...

Kirsten I hear you on the dire straits -- Philadelphia's permanently closing 11 library branches (one of them is mine) and laying off about 60 full-time library workers. I imagine materials will be cut, as well.
