I tire easily of books that are heavy and dramatic and overwrought with melancholy. This book is all of those things. The characters seem to wallow in their indecision. I found myself more than once rolling my eyes because a particular event or conversation or series of happenings would never, ever happen in real life. Still, in the end, there was enough story to warrant three stars from me. I enjoyed the character of Alice as much as I disliked her sister, Riley. The peripheral characters of family members and Paul are interesting, too, as are the descriptions of Fire Island and all its various villages and beaches. I do think Brashares should stick to YA fiction, though. (I listened to the audio version and enjoyed it, even if the reader was far too exacting in her speech and often over-enunciated her words.)
