it was amazing

Yeah, it's like two books in one, and yeah, they seem like very different stories to mash together, and yes, the square peg weirdness of the first half doesn't quite fit into the round emotional and real-life story of the second half, but it's still one of the most daring and uncompromising novels I've read in a while. It goes from one outer edge of life—the goofy imperfection of the Internet—to another, even further-out, edge—the shattering grief of a dying child, and somehow Lockwood stays in command of our attention.
One of my favorite moments, from late in the novel:
Her brother leaning over the hospital bed and singing "Sunrise, Sunset" in (the baby's) ear, his voice joking at first and then seemingly serious--because she liked it, of course she liked it, she could not tell the difference between beauty and a joke.
